ADTRAN adds system-level vectoring to broadband platforms

ADTRAN, Inc., (NASDAQ:ADTN) says it has added system-level vectoring capabilities to its portfolio of multi-service access nodes (MSANs) and DSLAMs. The new capabilities are designed to enable customers still using copper-based DSL networks to offer broadband services with speeds as great as 200 Mbps, ADTRAN says.

ADTRAN, Inc., (NASDAQ:ADTN) says it has added system-level vectoring capabilities to its portfolio of multi-service access nodes (MSANs) and DSLAMs. The new capabilities are designed to enable customers still using copper-based DSL networks to offer broadband services with speeds as great as 200 Mbps, ADTRAN says.

Vectoring is a noise cancellation technology that helps bonded VDSL2 connections transmit high transmission rates. ADTRAN says that a VDSL2 network with vectoring and two-pair bonding can hit the 200-Mbps target. While additional fiber is necessary to enable such data rates within the VDSL2 transmission range, the new capabilities enable service providers using DSL to better keep pace with cable operator competition without switching to fiber to the home (FTTH). It also opens the door to offering high-bandwidth business services over the same infrastructure.

The system-level vectoring implementation will connect multiple broadband units to create a domain across multi-system pairs in a single group. This improves vectoring gains and eliminates the complex binder management required by board-level vectoring implementations.

ADTRAN asserts it was among the first companies to demonstrate system-level vectoring. Now that the capability is being made available for ADTRAN’s hiX 5600 and Total Access 5000 MSANs and Total Access 1100 and 1200 small form-factor access nodes, the benefits of vectoring are now widely available, it adds.

“With vectoring technologies, service providers now have a complete fixed broadband access tool box that not only allows them to offer an expansive portfolio of deep fiber solutions, but also complements their next generation optical services,” said Stephen Wilson, senior analyst from Informa. “The system-level vectoring that ADTRAN is bringing to market is giving service providers the ability to deliver ultra-broadband services with better performance using field-proven outside plant technology.”
