The City of American Canyon, California has granted Competisys Corporation, headquartered in Irvine, California, a Broadband Systems License Agreement allowing the company to deliver fiber optic cabling directly into a home or business. Competisys will supply telephone, television and Internet services, making American Canyon the first city in California to gain access to a direct fiber optic system that delivers all three communication services at speeds of up to 100 Mega bits per second, which is 100 times faster than standard DSL. Services will begin mid-May 2001.

A development of homes will be the first neighborhood in the city to receive service, with interconnection of the city government buildings following shortly after. Competisys then plans to offer services to all new commercial and residential developments in American Canyon. "By connecting our government buildings with direct fiber, the city will be able to create a city-wide community-based, local area network," said Mark Joseph, City Manager of American Canyon. "This will enable city employees to work more efficiently with less downtime-waiting like on a typical modem line. In addition, it will let us communicate more directly with our citizen-customers."

By bringing direct fiber-to-the-home (FTTH), the slow-down in data rates associated with the "last mile" is eliminated. Therefore customers receive benefits such as: true telecommuting and Virtual Private Networks (VPNs); video-on-demand; up to 150 digital television stations and 37 digital music stations; lower long distance calling rates; remote worldwide access to online billing; and fast Internet speed. In addition, customers will receive competitively priced telephone, television, and Internet services on one bill, payable electronically through a secure site on the community portal.
