30 January 2003 -- Net to Net Technologies, Newbury, UK, has shown what it calls a "viable alternative to the likes of Sky Digital" for independent broadcasters and the general public alike.

The company contracted independent test labs, The NSS Group, based in the south of France, to run performance tests on its ADSL solution running Video Over DSL, the aim being to prove that both the technology and the business rationale work.

The resulting report, due for release in February 2003, addresses key questions in the Triple Play market such as "the business case for the service provider - does Triple Play offer ROI?" and "the financial case for the subscriber - is there a cost effective alternative to NTL, Sky And BT?"

"The momentum in the industry three years ago was all behind ATM based DSL solutions, but that has slowly changed, and today DSL solutions with Ethernet-based interfaces are generally available," said Lesley Hansen Marketing Director EMEA for Net to Net Technologies.

"However, there is a big performance difference between having an Ethernet interface and running a native IP Ethernet based solution. Those differences are reflected in Return on Investment (ROI) and Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), which are critical factors for the DSL Provider.

"We wanted to put our solutions to the test, and get independent assessment on the true performance of our Ethernet based Video Over DSL solution."

By using technologies such as IP Video and ADSL, along with protocols like IGMP (Internet Group Management Protocol) and Quality of Service (QoS) techniques, service providers can offer cable TV type services, high-speed Internet access, traditional telephony and other value added services over their existing fibre and copper infrastructure.

The Report looks at how Net To Net's solution works and how it scales to support substantial subscriber audiences. Backed by test results, the real benefits of using Ethernet as the DSL transport and the pros and cons of Ethernet versus ATM based DSL solutions are highlighted.

"Combining the results of the tests in the NSS labs with those customer experiences such as Midwest Net Tel, a group of eight Independent Operating Companies (IOCs) in rural southwestern Wisconsin who have formed a consortium to provide reliable Internet access and Internet-related services, we've proved that the Net to Net solution for Video over ADSL, and the broader "Triple Play" suite of services, works and works well" said Steve Broadhead, Director, NSS France.
