Sckipio touts distance extension for 500-Mbps G.fast broadband access

G.fast chip start-up Sckipio Technologies says it has demonstrated the use of their technology to send 500 Mbps over 200 m – twice the distance called for within the ITU's G.fast standards (see "G.fast standard ratified by ITU").

G.fast chip start-up Sckipio Technologies says it has demonstrated the use of their technology to send 500 Mbps over 200 m – twice the distance called for within the ITU's G.fast standards (see "G.fast standard ratified by ITU").

The communications IC vendor said it also showed it could support more than 200 Mbps at 400 m, twice the standard's specification as well.

Sckipio believes the demonstration will widen the application space for G.fast, particularly in rural areas.

"G.fast was optimized to deliver up to 1 Gbps in short distances," said David Baum, CEO of Sckipio. "Yet, we tuned our technology to allow telcos to reach more customers with higher performance from farther away."

Sckipio says the test results are preliminary, yet based on lab evaluations over real binders. The company expects to achieve even better results in the future.

Sckipio unveiled its G.fast chipset last October (see "G.fast chipsets from Sckipio Technologies debut"). Broadcom is its only competitor so far (see "Broadcom debuts end-to-end G.fast offering").
