Cox Communications says it has begun to deploy its G1GABLAST gigabit Internet service for residential customers in Fairfax County, Northern Virginia. The cable MSO asserts it is the first national telecommunications company to deploy gigabit Internet service to residential customers in the state.
It's not the first service provider of any time to provide gigabit broadband in Virginia, however (see, for example, "Ting Fiber Network offers gigabit broadband in Charlottesville").
Cox announced its intention to offer G1GABLAST in Virginia slightly more than a year ago (see "Cox extends gigabit rollout to Virginia"). The company says it already offers the gigabit broadband service in 10 states and expects to be able to offer all of its customers 1-Gbps downstream rates by the end of 2016.
Residents at Timber Ridge at Discovery Square will be the first to be offered the service in Fairfax County. Cox will charge $99.99 per month when combined with the company's most popular service bundles.
"Cox has invested $1.33 billion in our network in Virginia in the last ten years to meet the growing demands of our customers," said Cox Virginia Senior Vice President and Region Manager J.D. Myers, II. "We are committed to keeping our residential and businesses customers in Northern Virginia connected to the things they care about most, today and in the years to come."
