FEBRUARY 20, 2007 -- Calix (search for Calix) has signed a joint marketing agreement (JMA) with Nortel (search for Nortel), a follow up on the strategic alliance the two companies entered three years ago. The company also announced new customers in Canada.

The JMA allows the companies to continue working closely to help service providers deploy advanced packet-based broadband access infrastructure supporting Nortel's IP-based information, communication, and entertainment services. The strategic alliance generated 26 customers and resulted in the deployment of over 2,300 Calix C7 multiservice access platforms (MSAPs) and over 400,000 physical interfaces.

The JMA calls for the two companies to collaborate on a variety of marketing and sales activities. In addition to working together to promote emerging IP-based services, the companies will also leverage Calix Compatible, a "solutions assurance program" designed to ensure interoperability across multiple suppliers.

Meanwhile, Calix also announced that the C7 MSAP had been selected by Telephone Guevremont, a Quebec-based ILEC, and by Maskatel and Telephone Drummond, CLEC affiliates of Telephone Guevremont, for a network expansion project. The project will extend new fiber transport facilities to Drummondville, Quebec, overbuilding the current operator. From there, the Calix C7 will deliver voice, high-speed Internet access, and eventually IPTV services over 1.5-km loops using ADSL2+ and VDSL2 technology. Greenfield locations will be built out using 2.4-Gbit/sec GPON fiber to the premises (FTTP) facilities.

The three Quebec-based service providers will make use of the Calix C7 MSAP, the Calix Management System (CMS), and, for FTTP builds, the Calix 700-Series optical network terminals (ONTs). Plans call for the delivery of MPEG4-based IPTV services beginning in 2008.
