Bulgarian service provider Vivacom has begun the roll out of a GPON fiber to the home (FTTH) network using equipment from Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU). The network is expected to reach 1 million households – and reduce operation expenses.

The deployment is in keeping with the European Union’s Digital Agenda, which aims to provide access to 100-Mbps downstream data rates to half of European households and 30-Mbps speeds to all European households by 2020. Vivacom plans to offer 100 Mbps to customers in Sofia, Varna, and Plovdiv in 2012, with additional cities on tap in the future.

Said Bernard Moscheni, Vivacom CEO, "Vivacom is successfully implementing its program for network development, focused on guaranteeing a better customer experience as well as supporting Bulgaria in meeting its commitments to the European Union. Our partnership with Alcatel-Lucent – one of the leaders in this domain – will enable us to improve our product and services offerings to our customers."

The deployment leverages Alcatel-Lucent’s Intelligent Services Access Manager (ISAM) family, including the Alcatel-Lucent 7302 ISAM.
