Calix Inc. (NYSE: CALX) says that GVTC Communications has deployed the Calix E7-20 Ethernet Service Access Platform (ESAP) and 700GE family of optical network terminals (ONTs) for the GVTC GigaRegion project in the cities of Boerne, Bulverde, and Gonzales, TX.
Based on GPON technology, GVTC’s upgraded fiber-optic network will bring high-bandwidth data speeds of 1 Gbps to 39,000 homes, businesses, and anchor institutions just north of San Antonio via 2200 miles of fiber. GVTC will offer voice, video, and security monitoring, along with high-speed data services throughout the GVTC GigaRegion beginning in September 2014.
GVTC is a communications provider in south Texas that brought fiber to the region 10 years ago. The GVTC GigaRegion project is a public/private partnership with the municipalities of Boerne, Bulverde, and Gonzales, which are some of the fastest growing communities in the state. In this partnership, GVTC and the three towns will work together on a two-year comprehensive marketing plan to promote the business and lifestyle benefits of GVTC's GigaRegion.
"Calix technology is the foundation for being able to create the GVTC GigaRegion, which our municipal partners will use to fulfill their vision for managed growth," said GVTC president and CEO Ritchie Sorrells. "With the untapped possibilities of a gigabit Internet connection, made possible through the Calix platform, the GVTC GigaRegion will be a center of ingenuity and entrepreneurialism."
"GVTC has once again raised the bar for broadband in south Texas with the GVTC GigaRegion," said John Colvin, Calix senior vice president of North American sales. "Gigabit services are definitely giving our customers an advantage against their competition by enabling a new way of life for their residential and business subscribers. As GVTC turns up gigabit services in each of these three communities, we are excited to see the economic development benefits enabled by the power of a gigabit."
With the launch of the GVTC GigaRegion, Calix says it has now enabled 30 gigabit Internet service deployments around the world (see, for example, “Calix gear used by gigabit FTTH communities in 14 states”).
