Hyperoptic, which uses fiber to the home (FTTH) technology to offer 1-Gbps broadband services in the UK, says it has extended its service footprint outside of London for the first time. The company now offers its broadband access services to residential and commercial properties in Bristol, Cardiff, and Reading.

The service provider says it selected these cities for expansion “based on a number of factors,” which include service demand and population density. The company plans to further increase its operating range later in the year, including deeper penetration into London. The company expects to market to more than 35,000 homes spanning 150 major property developments in the capital this year, with a goal of half a million homes by 2018. Hyperoptic first launched its 1-Gbps services in London in September 2011 (see "Hyperoptic bring 1-Gbps broadband to London").

"We are delighted to bring Hyperoptic to residential and commercial developments in Bristol, Cardiff, and Reading,” says Dana Tobak, managing director and co-founder of Hyperoptic. “Our ground-breaking broadband speeds have been available to schemes in London since 2011, and there is clearly robust demand for speed, reliability, and connectivity across the UK. This is no more true than in these three cities, which we are pleased to name as our first ‘hypercities' outside the capital."
