Orange says it plans to use the fiber to the home (FTTH) assets in Spain it recently acquired with Jazztel as a foundation for further deployments. The France-based service provider says its FTTH footprint will grow from the current 5.2 million households to 10 million in 2016 and 14 million by the end of 2020.

The 2020 goal represents a 4 million home increase from Orange's previously stated ambitions. The company says it will invest between 1.5 and 1.7 billion euros to hit this target. Should the company succeed, its FTTH network will cover more than 80% of the total Spanish cities with population greater than 20,000 inhabitants.

Orange acquired the Spanish service provider this past summer. Jazztel had been an early proponent of FTTH in Spain (see, for example, "ZTE provides turnkey FTTH network for Jazztel in Spain" and "Jazztel, ZTE test 10G GPON").
