SEPTEMBER 11, 2007 — Sumitomo Electric Lightwave introduced a 24-fiber bundle for its FutureFLEX air-blown fiber infrastructure line. Using the 24-fiber bundle can increase fiber capacity in each pathway by 33%. Sumitomo cites emerging high-bandwidth services, such as voice over IP (VoIP), as impetus for adding air-blown fiber.
The FutureFLEX system typically offers 38 fiber pathways per 4" conduit, via its tube cable LAN infrastructure. Sumitomo claims that adding the 24-fiber bundle reduces labor time by eliminating extra installation steps. The bundles can reportedly be blown quickly and simply in secure, limited-access, or normal areas. They suit network expansions, upgrades, or reconfigurations. Blown-out fiber bundles can be reused in other parts of the network to retain investment.
