Germany’s Stadtwerke Landau a.d. Isar deploys 180-μm fiber cable from Prysmian

The fiber-optic cable uses the smallest-diameter fiber on the market, surpassing the 200-μm optical fiber now displacing conventional 250-μm fiber cable.

Prysmian Group says that German public utility supplier Stadtwerke Landau a.d. Isar is the first customer to deploy the cable-maker’s Sirocco Extreme 180-μm fiber cable. The fiber-optic cable uses the smallest-diameter fiber on the market, surpassing the 200-μm optical fiber now displacing conventional 250-μm fiber cable.

NETTec GmbH deployed the narrow fiber cable, which Stadtwerke Landau a.d. Isar will use to support the delivery of FTTx and 5G services. The Sirocco Extreme micro-cable used in the deployment contains 288 fibers within an outer diameter of 6.5 mm, a density of 8.7 fibers per square millimeter. Prysmian says the fiber-optic cable can be installed in an 8-mm ID micro-duct.

Overall, the Sirocco Extreme cables are available with from 96 to 522 BendBrightXS bend-insensitive fibers and with an external diameter of 4.5 to 7.5 mm (see "Prysmian intros BendBrightXS 180µm bend-insensitive single-mode fiber"). The cables comply with international standards for optical and mechanical performance, says the company.

“Conventional optical fiber cables often no longer fit into the tightly packed ducting. This means new ducting needs to be laid, which is costly and time-consuming,” said Toni Bosch, vice president telecom solutions at Prysmian Group. “Thanks to Prysmian’s BendBrightXS 180-μm fiber and Pico-Tube technology, Sirocco Extreme is up to 40% smaller than the previous Sirocco micro-cable. The space-saving design allows for efficient integration of the fiber cable into existing infrastructures. Plus, blowing in the cable is easy and fast, at a speed of 130 m/min.”
