FEBRUARY 3, 2010 -- JDS Uniphase Corp. (JDSU) in Milpitas, Calif., is introducing the Mini 50 GHz wavelength selective switch (WSS) module in a smaller package than its predecessors with support for sophisticated mesh network architectures.

JDSU tests show that the device can support network traffic through more than 16 nodes -- or entry and exit points in a network -- with minimal effect to the network signal. JDSU officials say it can support a signal in as many as 26 nodes.

The Mini 50 WSS represents the next generation of JDSU 50 GHz WSS modules that have been deployed in networks worldwide since 2003. These modules have proven optical network performance and reliability in routing and managing network traffic. JDSU WSS modules are the only ones that are carrying live 100G network traffic today, JDSU officials say.

Mini 50 WSS features include 1 X 9 port configuration; optical performance that better isolates and maintains signals; reduced height and smaller form factor; and 40G data rates and ready for 100G network speeds.
