NOVEMBER 30, 2009 -- According to a newly published report by Dell’Oro Group, total PON equipment revenues from sales of optical line terminals and optical networking terminals were the highest ever in the third quarter of this year. Such sales grew 8 percent sequentially and 6 percent over the year-ago period.

“Within the total PON market, GPON revenue growth was strongest, driven by the increasing deployments outside of North America,” said Tam Dell’Oro, president of Dell’Oro Group. “EPON revenue was also a key contributor to the third quarter’s record performance; however, EPON revenue grew at a slower pace than GPON, as rapidly growing deployments in China were partially offset by slower sales to Japan,” Dell’Oro added.

The report shows that Huawei increased its lead in the EPON segment due to its status as top vendor in the China market, and surpassed Alcatel-Lucent to take the lead in the GPON segment in large part due to increased shipments to Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.

Mitsubishi, the principal supplier to NTT in Japan, was second behind Huawei in the EPON segment, and Alcatel-Lucent posted the number two spot in the GPON market.
