MARCH 27, 2009 -- Vitesse Semiconductor Corp. (search Lightwave for Vitesse) has established a network of technology companies to collectively address and advance development of next-generation, end-to-end, passive optical networking (PON) systems. The members of the FTTx Ecosystem will apply their respective architectural expertise to the deployment of 10G and 40G PON in access networks that deliver triple-play services for high-speed data, voice, and video transmissions. This collective effort will focus on standards compliance, backward compatibility, and a smooth upgrade path from existing PON networks, Vitesse reports.
"We are pleased to work with leading technology companies such as Teknovus, Emcore, and Anritsu in next-generation PON system development and look forward to expanding ecosystem participation," says Raymond Fontayne, senior product marketing manager for Vitesse. "The ecosystem's objectives include proving interoperability with subsystem and component vendors and shortening time-to-market for our network equipment OEM customers."
The initial participants of the FTTx Ecosystem include Vitesse, Teknovus (search Lightwave for Teknovus), Emcore (search Lightwave for Emcore), and Anritsu (search Lightwave for Anritsu).
In addition to its latest set of physical medium-dependent devices (PMDs) and physical layer transceivers, Vitesse is providing access to advanced technology and demonstration vehicles to ecosystem participants. The company will also provide feedback to standards bodies focused on PON deployment and adoption.
Teknovus has demonstrated triple-rate (10/100/1000) PON media access controllers (MACs) with support for 10-, 2.5-, and 1.25-Gbps downstream data rates as well as 1.25- and 10-Gbps upstream data rates, enabling carriers to reduce costs by supporting coexistence of 1.25-, 2.5-, and 10-Gbps optical network units (ONUs) within a single fiber plant. The physical coding layer and multipoint MAC control layer are central to the system, say the participants, since new FTTX deployments will require reuse and extension of existing PON technologies for the higher layers.
"Working with Vitesse burst-mode capable SerDes, Teknovus has been able to validate its Turbo-XPON product line in the industry's highest-performance 10G symmetrical EPON solution. We are already demonstrating this complete system solution to our customers, who are under extreme pressure to field a proven 10GEPON system as quickly as possible," says Robin Grindley, director of product line management for Teknovus.
"We are pleased to collaborate with Vitesse in the ecosystem initiative. Our 10G TOSA and ROSA have proven to work flawlessly with Vitesse's 10GPON burst mode driver chipset, resulting in the industry's first 10GPON market solution," says Chris Wiggins, director of product line management for Emcore.
Validation of next-generation PON solutions has taken place recently using the latest test gear equipped with the most recent standards requirements. The end-to-end system was tested with reference platforms using Anritsu test equipment along with independent confirmation in labs around the world.
"Anritsu is very excited to participate with Vitesse in validating their 10GPON solutions. Vitesse is developing chipsets with features and performance that exceed industry specifications. To help ensure such high-level performance, the design team relied on our MP1800A Signal Quality Analyzer," says Wade Hulon, vice president and general manager, Americas Sales Region, Anritsu Co. "The MP1800A, with its multichannel configuration, burst signal BERT capability, auxiliary preamble signals output, and the dedicated PON software, is the perfect solution for controlling burst data and accurately measuring the performance of PON devices. These features have helped Vitesse improve development efficiency and increase yield."
