JUNE 20 2008 -- Two North American telecommunications service providers have selected broadband access supplier Occam Networks (search for Occam) to provide GPON products for delivery of FTTP and advanced voice, data, and video services. Occam Networks offers multiservice access platforms (MSAPs) based on pure packet technologies. The service providers include Sogetel of Quebec, Canada, and Marquette-Adams Telephone Cooperative based in Oxford, WI.
"Telecommunications service providers of all sizes are rapidly upgrading their networks to accommodate the enormous bandwidth demands resulting from the deluge of social and business networking, video, IPTV, and other content that both businesses and consumers are demanding," says Teresa Mastrangelo, founder, principal analyst, and director of research at BroadbandTrends.com, an independent market research and consulting firm specializing in the coverage of broadband infrastructure and services. "Occam Networks' GPON solutions fit the needs of many telcos, based on the ability to incorporate both Point-to-Point (P2P) and GPON architectures as well as the Occam packet engine's ability to shape and manage traffic."
Sogetel, an independent telecommunications company, operates nearly 26,000 telephone access lines in four geographic areas (Beauce-Etchemins, Centre-du-Quebec, Maskinongé, and Saint-Liboire) of Quebec through an optical fiber network linking each sector with major urban centers. After evaluating many fiber access solutions, Occam reports that Sogetel chose its GPON product based on innovation, performance, and ease of use. The company plans to continue to use Occam's BLC equipment to expand its offerings for subscribers.
Marquette-Adams currently provides triple-play services to its customers over Occam's ADSL2Plus platform, but with the rising demand for high-definition TV, video-on-demand, and the expectation of additional broadband services in the future, the company felt the need to offer more bandwidth. The service provider has successfully deployed Occam's GPON technology as part of its network evolution strategy and plans to achieve its goal of 100% deployment of FTTH in the next three to four years. Marquette-Adams Telephone Cooperative offers subscribers local and long-distance telephone service, IPTV, DSL, and web hosting, and operates 3,500 access lines.
"As we developed plans to advance our triple-play service offerings to our subscribers, we determined that a GPON solution made strategic and economic sense for the future of our access network," says Bryan Amundson, Marquette-Adams CEO. "After a thorough review process, Occam Networks' GPON products rose above competing solutions based on its ease of deployment, rapid turn-up, and innovative suite of features."
At the center of the company's GPON offerings is the Occam Packet Engine, developed to support the massive Ethernet switching and IP packet processing that triple-play networks require. Using this chip, a single OLT blade switches packets at rates up to 15 Gbits/sec, can be field upgraded to perform deep packet inspection, manages 2,048 data streams, and delivers hardware-based quality-of-service, security, and multicast management. The GPON line consists of the BLC 6322 optical line terminal (OLT) blade and ON 2400 series optical network terminals (ONTs).
Unlike access systems that layer GPON onto older, cell-based technology, Occam says its system supports full line-rate bandwidth for every GPON port simultaneously and integrates 10G transport -- a key enabler of FTTP architectures. This is critical for high IP-HDTV on-demand take rates.
"As access technologies continue to evolve, application developers will create new types of content and new ways to stream media-rich content, which in turn will spur new services and consumer demand," says Russ Sharer, Occam's vice president of marketing. "Occam is dedicated to developing new technologies and solutions that help service providers address their communications requirements while staying one step ahead of their competition. Our commitment is to deliver solutions that are innovative, easy to install and ensure the industry's fastest time to revenue."
