JUNE 25, 2008 -- PMC-Sierra Inc. (search for PMC-Sierra) has announced what it calls the industry's first demonstration of 10-Gbit/sec IEEE 802.3av EPON. The demonstration -- based on PMC-Sierra's reference designs for 10G EPON, which include the PAS8001 for 10G optical line terminals (OLT) and the PAS9001 for 10G optical network units (ONUs) -- was conducted at OptiNet China, May 28-29, in Beijing, China.

"CTC developed an EPON enterprise standard that has driven chipset and equipment vendors to ensure their solutions successfully achieve interoperability with it," said Wang Bo, senior business associate manager of the Technical Department of China Telecom (CTC). "As a result, we have started quantity deployment. We are very interested in the new 10G EPON specification, IEEE 802.3av, and look forward to a version supporting unique CTC features, ensuring 10G EPON interoperability and a future smooth upgrade path from 1G EPON."

PMC-Sierra has also announced the availability of a whitepaper, "10G EPON Brings Advantages to the Fiber Access Network." It is available here (registration required).
