NOVEMBER 12, 2008 -- Telecom carrier Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd. (MTNL) has teamed with Indian fiber cabling supplier Aksh Optifibre to construct an FTTH network to provide HDTV and "multiplay services" to subscribers.
The location of the network and the number of subscribers served was not disclosed.
The new access infrastructure is part of a general evolution toward optical communications. MTNL upgraded its broadband infrastructure approximately three years ago; it's now based an on optical backbone.

We are working closely technology partners like Aksh, to meet the challenge of providing fibre based solutions to all homes in our area of operation. This fibre technology will enable us to bring faster higher-quality, high-definition content and more interactive capabilities to our subscribers than any other platform which exists today.
