Ribbon Splicing. Redefined. Introducing the Q102-M12+ Ribbon Fiber Splicer and JR-7 Thermal Jacket Remover.

Sept. 18, 2023

Sumitomo Electric announced the release of the Q102-M12+ – an AI-enabled ribbon fiber splicer – and an advanced thermal jacket remover, the JR-7 at the BICSI Fall Conference last week, September 11.

The Q102-M12+ builds upon its predecessor, the Q102-M12, with new technologies that improve splicing performance, reliability, and overall user experience. A significant new feature of the Q102-M12+ is the inclusion of Sumitomo Electric’s patented NanoTune™ technology. NanoTune™ drastically reduces the need for splice reworks caused by insufficient fiber preparation, such as poor cleaving, thus reducing overall costs.

A special coating on the V-grooves and lens reduces buildup and dust, meaning less time for cleaning. The coating also preserves image quality for a superior splice by acting as an anti-scratch and anti-fog shield.

The height of versatility, the Q102-M12+ allows for toolless replaceable V-grooves that handle different pitch ribbons. A splicing technician can now splice 200 m and 250 m ribbon fibers with the same machine, saving space without requiring multiple units. With splicing speeds of 11 seconds in Quick Mode and a heating time of 28 seconds, the Q102-M12+ works fast but efficiently with its Enhanced-Auto-Clamping Adjust System (ACAS), ensuring better fiber alignment.

Sumitomo Electric has also made extensive advancements to its thermal jacket remover JR-7 to complete a technician’s ribbon splicing toolkit. Design improvements provide light to visualize ribbon fiber in dark environments and vibration to alert when the process is complete.

Q102-M12+ will be available for purchase this fall in North America and CALA regions.
