Infinera (NASDAQ: INFN) says that Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX) has deployed its Cloud Xpress 2 terabit-scale data center interconnect (DCI) platform to expand their delivery capacity for streaming videos. Netflix chose the Cloud Xpress 2 for the optical networking platform’s compact design and ease of installation, says the Infinera.

The Cloud Xpress 2 is the second generation of Infinera's Cloud Xpress family, and features the Infinera Infinite Capacity Engine (ICE4), also available in the Infinera XTS-3300 for subsea applications and the XT-3300 for terrestrial long-haul applications. Delivering 1.2 Tbps of capacity up to 130 km without external equipment, the Cloud Xpress 2 enables use of multiple modulation formats via Infinera's FlexCoherent Processor, in-flight wire-speed data encryption, and the benefits of the company's Instant Bandwidth capabilities.

Netflix delivers 125 hours of streaming TV shows and movies per day to over 100 million Netflix members in more than 190 countries. Use of the Cloud Xpress 2 will enable Netflix to activate and pay for additional capacity in minutes, reducing initial cost of deployment, while continuing to meet dynamic capacity demands with its Instant Bandwidth capabilities, says Infinera.

"The Infinera Cloud Xpress 2 makes it easy to deploy new high-capacity links between our Open Connect content delivery points of presence and quickly scale capacity to match demand," said Dave Temkin, Netflix vice president of global networks.

Infinera unveiled the first generation of the Cloud Xpress in 2014 and launched the trend toward purpose-built DCI platforms (see "Infinera tackles metro on two fronts"). In June, the company announced that its Cloud Xpress 2 data center interconnect (DCI) platform reached the general availability stage (see "Infinera announces general availability, deployment of Cloud Xpress 2 data center interconnect platform").
