Equinix deploys Infinera Cloud Xpress for metro data center interconnect in Tokyo
Infinera says that customer Equinix has added Tokyo to the list of markets in which the global interconnection and data center service company is using the Cloud Xpress. The optical transport systems vendor previously had revealed that Equinix is using the platform for metro data center interconnect in Hong Kong (see "Equinix uses Cloud Xpress for data center interconnect").
Equinix will use the Cloud Xpress to connect four of its International Business Exchange (IBX) data centers in Tokyo, which Infinera says serve more than 260 companies. The service provider recently announced it will acquire Japanese data center services provider Bit-isle Inc. (see "Equinix targets Japanese expansion via Bit-isle acquisition"). Once consummated, the deal would add four data centers in Tokyo and another in Osaka to Equinix's footprint, which conceivably could lead to additional Cloud Xpress deployments in Japan.
The service provider operates IBX data centers in 33 markets across 15 countries in the Americas, Europe/Middle East/Africa (EMEA), and Asia-Pacific regions. It would appear the company expects to deploy the Cloud Xpresss in at least some of these markets as well.
"Equinix is rapidly expanding across the globe," said Teri Francis, vice president of technology at Equinix. "Cloud Xpress is an ideal solution for us to scale bandwidth in our Hong Kong and Tokyo networks and enhance our ability to connect our customers. Cloud Xpress is extremely simple to deploy and manage and fits our high-density, low-power requirements. We are now looking forward to deploying the Cloud Xpress family in other markets globally to take advantage of these same scaling benefits."
Infinera launched the 1RU Cloud Xpress for metro data center interconnect applications in September 2014 (see "Infinera tackles metro on two fronts"). It recently unveiled a 2RU long-haul companion, the DTN-X XT Series (see "Infinera embraces Transmode, new products in metro portfolio").
