On August 8, data center developer Start Campus announced that its SINES DC campus will receive expanded power allocation from Portuguese energy company Redes Energéticas Nacionais (REN), bringing the total IT capacity secured for the campus from 495 MW to 1.2 GW.
SINES DC is located in Sines, Portugal, south of the capital city of Lisbon—an area that Start Campus describes as compelling for subsea and terrestrial connectivity. The campus will eventually host six buildings, which will be developed through 2030.
Start Campus reports that SINE DC’s first building, SIN01, will be operational by Q4 2024 and will have an initial IT capacity of 14 MW, eventually expanding to 26 MW. The following buildings, SIN02 through SIN06, will reportedly support up to 240 MW of IT capacity each. The company also reports that the campus will use seawater cooling technology to improve efficiency and minimize environmental impact.
Rob Dunn, Start Campus CEO, said securing the additional grid capacity marks a significant milestone for the company.
“The scale of SINES DC, coupled with our unique seawater cooling solution, creates an unprecedented offering that sets new standards for the industry,” said Dunn in a press release. “I am proud to deliver a solution that sustainably meets the evolving needs of our customers."
