Cable&Wireless Worldwide chooses Infinera's DTN-X for Europe Persia Express Gateway

Infinera (NASDAQ: INFN) says that Cable&Wireless Worldwide (CWW) will use its new DTN-X platform for its leg of the Europe Persia Express Gateway (EPEG) network. CWW becomes the first announced customer of the DTN-X, which Infinera debuted last September (see “Infinera debuts DTN-X packet-optical transport platform with 500G PIC, OTN/MPLS support”).

EPEG is designed to provide an alternative to existing undersea connections between Europe and the Middle East that run through the Red Sea, Suez Canal, Egypt, or the Mediterranean Sea. The approximately 10,000-km network will stretch from Frankfurt to Oman, with all but 246 km of EPEG running terrestrially.

Several carriers have combined to construct EPEG, with CWW focused on the segment from Frankfurt to the Ukraine/Russian border. It is this link that will see the deployment of the DTN-X, which is Infinera’s superchannel-enabled packet-optical transport platform.

“We believe that the Europe Persia Express Gateway is an important international network development as it will be providing high-capacity, diverse connectivity from the Middle East Region to Europe," said Rick Perry, vice president international planning at Cable&Wireless Worldwide. "Infinera's solution is helping to underpin that development."

The deployment schedule is being kept under wraps but should begin at some point this year.

In the companies most recent earnings call, Infinera CEO Tom Fallon revealed that four customer trials of the DTN-X were underway. This announcement is a likely result of one of those trials.

Mark Showalter, senior director, marketing at Infinera, told Lightwave last week that the DTN-X order is part of a larger purchase agreement with CWW that enables the carrier to buy other elements of the Infinera portfolio.
