Marine-subsidiary purchase

Cable and Wireless (Marine) Ltd., London, has signed an agreement with British Telecommunications plc to purchase its marine subsidiary, BT (Marine) Ltd. BT will retain its position as a ship owner in the Atlantic Cable Maintenance Agreement. Cable and Wireless installs and repairs optical fiber submarine cables.

Cable and Wireless in the Cayman Islands has chosen Northern Telecom, Miami Lakes, FL, to supply a high-capacity synchronous digital hierarchy optical transmission network in the Caribbean region. The SDH network will form a fully protected fiber-optic ring from West Bay to Safe Haven and to George Town. Equipment to be supplied includes Fiberworld TN-1X, a managed 1/4 SDH multiplexer for deployment in the outer core/junction of transport networks. The TN-1X provides 2 to 155-megabit-per-second terminal multiplexing capability, which will be software-configured for self-healing rings.
