Tellium Acquires Astarte; Corning to License All-Optical Switching IP

Oct. 18, 2000
Tellium Inc. announced it has completed its acquisition of Astarte Fiber Networks, a privately held Colorado-based company that designs and manufactures photonic fiber-optic matrix switching systems used in high-speed optical networks.

Tellium Inc. announced it has completed its acquisition of Astarte Fiber Networks, a privately held Colorado-based company that designs and manufactures photonic fiber-optic matrix switching systems used in high-speed optical networks. Tellium says the acquisition of Astarte will expand its intellectual property in all-optical switching to complement its current optical switching portfolio.

In a related transaction, Tellium disclosed that Corning Inc., a manufacturer of optical fiber, cable, and photonic products for the telecommunications industry, recently licensed three Astarte patents relating to servo and control systems for MEMS (micro electromechanical systems) technology for its use in development of all-optical switch modules.

Earlier this year, Tellium announced the Aurora Full-Spectrum switch, currently in development and designed to combine all?optical bypass switching with electronic control and processing. Full-Spectrum is being designed to exploit the bit-rate independent carrying potential of all-optical switches while uniquely making available to them the manageability of optoelectronic interfaces. Tellium says the goal is to create a scalable optical switch that is OC-768-ready without sacrificing network manageability and control.

Tellium is a provider of high-capacity optical switches and has developed what it claims is the first in-service, intelligent optical switch.
