Lucent to provide optical network for Korean National Railroad and E-Seoul Project

February 20, 2002--Lucent Technologies today announced that it has won contracts from the Korean National Railroad and the Seoul Metropolitan Government to provide high-capacity metro optical networking systems for their enhanced communications networks. Lucent's system will enable the two organizations to meet increasing demand for bandwidth and provide new information services for their customers.

Korean National Railroad Project

Korean National Railroad (KNR), an administrative organization under the Ministry of Construction and Transportation, awarded Lucent Technologies a contract to purchase 70 Lucent WaveStar ADM 16/1 systems and associated management systems, called the Integrated Transport Management (ITM) system. KNR plans to connect its 1,885 stations and offices with a high-speed communications system by replacing its existing copper cable network with a cost-effective optical network by 2005.

The new optical network will help KNR meet the increasing demands of its 118 million passengers a year through new services such as an on-line ticketing service and railroad information systems. The new system will employ the Lucent WaveStar ADM 16/1 system, capable of transmitting up to 2.5 Gbits/sec on a single fiber, enough capacity for the simultaneous transmission of 2,500 books or 32,000 phone calls per second, claim Lucent representatives. Installation of the new system is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year.

"We consider this optical project as the first significant step in making our network evolve to meet the needs of our passengers today and in future," contends Shin Woo-Hyun, manager of the Information/Communication Department, Korean National Railroad. "Lucent's advanced technology and end-to-end service will create a reliable foundation upon which we will be able to create a variety of new services for our customers."

Seoul Metropolitan Government's e-Seoul project

Seoul Metropolitan Government selected Lucent to supply its WaveStar ADM
16/1 system to build an information highway, an advanced optical network linking metropolitan buildings throughout Seoul. This contract expands Seoul's existing WaveStar ADM 16/ 1 network, which was deployed last year. Lucent will deploy six systems in the branch offices by the end of March 2002.

Last year the Seoul Metropolitan Government, the administrative organization of the capital of Korea, initiated "e-Seoul 2001," a project aimed to improve the efficiency of administration and to provide various information for its citizens based on an intelligent information infrastructure.

With Lucent optical networking systems, Seoul expects to reduce its annual expense for leased lines by up to $2.8 million while simultaneously improving the quality and quantity of services offered, including electronic document transfer, Geographic Information System (GIS), online training programs for public servants and citizens, as well as the online integration of all its departments.

The WaveStar ADM 16/1, which can be used for interoffice, access or regional applications, is a metro optical multiplexer that enables carriers to use SDH technology to set up optical network rings. The system does this by combining multiple low-speed electrical and optical inputs into a single 2.5 Gbit/sec signal.
