Local exchange carrier icg Communications Inc. of Englewood, CO, has agreed to merge with Internet service provider netcom On-Line Communication Services Inc., San Jose, CA, to create a full-service business communications company. The merger is structured as a tax-free transaction between netcom and an icg subsidiary, and the new company will provide a single source for voice, data, Internet, Web hosting, and other communications services over a fiber-optic network. The combined company will have a network platform interconnecting 330 Internet points of presence, more than 40,000 dial-in access ports, 18 telephony, 15 frame relay switches, and nearly 2900 fiber route-mi. There are another 1117 route-mi under construction.
