Macquarie takes 40% stake in ST Telemedia Global Data Centres’ VIRTUS Data Centres subsidiary
Singapore-based data center services provider ST Telemedia Global Data Centres (STT GDC) says it has closed a deal on December 22, 2022, with Macquarie Asset Management that sees Macquarie take a 40% stake in VIRTUS Data Centres. VIRTUS, STT GDC’s European subsidiary, will see significant expansion as a result.
STT GDC says it expects VIRTUS to open new data center campuses in such countries as Germany, Italy, Spain, and Poland, among others. The company says that it will partner with Macquarie to invest close to £2 billion in such expansion over the next five years. STT GDC already manages 11 data center facilities in the Greater London region through VIRTUS.
"This is an exciting milestone for STT GDC,” commented Bruno Lopez, president and group CEO of STT GDC. “Macquarie Asset Management's investment is a testament to the strength and scalability of our data center business. This substantial capital injection coupled with both partners' unique expertise will help us accelerate our expansion into the European Economic Area to capture the enormous opportunities ahead and cement our leadership in the industry.”
"STT GDC's high-quality platform has captured the new consumption habits of consumers, and the digitization of business processes, as the digital economy continues to thrive. We are delighted to partner with STT GDC to help scale VIRTUS's operations,” added Nathan Luckey, a senior managing director within Macquarie Asset Management's Real Assets team. “Through this long-term investment, coupled with our sustainability expertise, we intend to help drive their ambitious expansion across continental Europe where we believe there will be sizeable growth opportunities for data center players during the next decade."
In addition to the UK facilities, STT GDC manages more than 170 data centers in eight other countries - Singapore, India, China, Thailand, South Korea, Indonesia, Japan, and the Philippines.
