EXFO has expanded its portfolio for testing photonic integrated circuits (PICs) via the acquisition of Quebec City based EHVA. EHVA offers PIC test stations, unified test automation and management software capabilities, and PIC test services. It appears the automation capabilities sparked the deal, the financial terms of which were not disclosed.

EHVA spun out of the Center for Optics, Photonics, and Lasers (COPL) at Laval University in March 2019 with CEO Raphael Dubé-Demers and CTO Wei Shi as co-founders. Both executives will come aboard EXFO along with the rest of the company’s team.

EXFO says it plans to integrate EHVA’s process software suite with its swept continuous laser scanning technology to enable fully automated PIC testing that improves efficiency and performance while avoiding production bottlenecks. The new capabilities will advance EXFO’s ambition to provide automated, turnkey end-to-end testing of optical components from lab to manufacturing, according to the company.
