Lightpath establishes foothold in Boston via acquisition

June 22, 2021
The three acquisitions set up Lightpath with more than 80 route miles of high-count fiber network combined. The fiber assets serve more than 100 locations, including 12 area data centers.

Lightpath, which provides fiber-optic network enterprise connectivity services, will soon launch operations in Boston via a trio of acquisitions. The company says it has agreed to purchase Cambridge Network Solutions (CNS), a second area connectivity provider whose name was not disclosed, and the fiber network assets from Hub Fiber. The first two deals have closed, while the third was expected to close within 30 days, Lightpath announced June 16.

The company used cash on its balance sheet to fund the deals which Lightpath said “will not have a material impact on the Company’s leverage.” The sums paid for the three companies were not disclosed.

The three acquisitions set up Lightpath with more than 80 route miles of high-count fiber network combined. The fiber assets serve more than 100 locations, including 12 area data centers, throughout Boston, Cambridge, Somerville, Waltham, Burlington, Billerica, Bedford, and Lowell. Lightpath plans to connect this infrastructure to its New York Metro network, thus expanding on its existing 18,000 route miles of fiber serving more than 12,000 locations. The company plans to offer its full slate of services to customers in the region. The product roster includes optical transport, Ethernet, internet access, private networks, dark fiber, SD-WAN, voice, security offerings, and other managed services.

“Greater Boston is a perfect expansion area for Lightpath, with its robust technology and biotech industries, financial services sector, world-leading universities and research institutes, tech-savvy governments, and other enterprise businesses,” commented Chris Morley, Lightpath’s CEO. “This is the first step for Lightpath expanding beyond the New York Metro region after reliably serving thousands of customers there for over 30 years. We are excited to bring our network, connectivity solutions, and innovative customer service approach to more organizations. These acquisitions will help us hit the ground running, and we will be able to start serving new customers right away.”
