SEPTEMBER 19, 2007 -- ADVA Optical Networking (search for ADVA) has announced that it has deployed more than 100,000 Ethernet access ports to global communications provider BT Group (search for BT Group). ADVA provides carriers around the world with advanced Ethernet demarcation, extension, and aggregation services via its Ethernet access portfolio, featuring proprietary Etherjack technology. According to the company, these services ensure that BT Group is able to deliver new bandwidth-intensive applications to its expanding business and residential markets with a high level of flexibility, control, and management.

BT Group's principal activities include networked IT services, local, national and international telecommunications services, and higher-value broadband and Internet products and services. The company's service-orientated structure is exemplified by its 21st Century Network (21CN), one of the world's largest converged next-generation networks.

Since 2001, ADVA has played a role in BT Group's Ethernet access strategy. Most of the 100,000 Ethernet ports deployed by ADVA support BT Group's 14 Ethernet services, covering distances between 10 and 40 km and ranging in speeds from 1 Mbit/sec to 10 Gbits/sec. These services support a number of vital business applications, including LAN extension, ISP Gateway access, Gigabit SAN links and backhaul extension.

"One hundred thousand Ethernet ports deployed marks a significant milestone in our relationship with BT Group," says Reg Armitage, ADVA's vice president of Northern European sales. "Together we have created one of the world's largest installed base of Ethernet products; one that continues to grow on a daily basis. As BT Group transitions to 21CN, the demand for intelligent Ethernet services increases, and as one of 21CN's ten strategic vendors we are ideally placed to fulfil their needs."

Infonetics Research recently announced ADVA Optical Networking as the world's leading provider of Ethernet access devices (EAD) with a 32% market share. Earlier this year, the company launched its latest Ethernet device, the ADVA FSP 150CCf-825. This product has been selected for deployment throughout BT 21CN.

"This announcement underscores ADVA Optical Networking's principal position in the EAD market," comments Michael Howard, principal analyst and cofounder of Infonetics Research. "We can see BT's leadership in the introduction of Ethernet as the preferred network access technology reflected around the globe as other carriers migrate from legacy technologies to carrier-class Ethernet services, helping drive the rapid growth in the Ethernet market. The ADVA FSP 150 family is positioned to be in the leader position for some time to come."
