SEPTEMBER 11, 2008 -- As an example of the growing popularity of 40-Gbit/sec networking, TeraXion Inc. (search for Teraxion) says that it has shipped more than 5,000 tunable chromatic dispersion compensation (TDC) modules for such applications.

As optical networks move towards higher line rates and greater reconfigurability, the requirements for more flexible dispersion management solutions become more stringent than ever, the company says. The ClearSpectrum TDC product line is designed to enable high-speed transmission links by managing residual chromatic dispersion at DWDM terminals. TeraXion asserts that the ClearSpectrum TDC and the new wavelength-tunable ClearSpectrum TDCX have the smallest footprint in the industry, powered by TeraXion's patented multi-channel fiber Bragg grating technology. The TDCs are designed to provide large dispersion tuning range, wide bandwidth, and low PMD to support any 40- and 100-Gbit/sec modulation formats for metro, regional, and long-haul applications. TeraXion adds its TDCs are also deployed in submarine applications.

High-speed technology vendor StrataLight Communications (which recently agreed to be purchased by Opnext) has worked with TeraXion since 2006. "We selected TeraXion because it provides us not only with the performance required, but also with the manufacturing capacity and product reliability needed to meet our customers' expectations in this rapidly growing 40-Gbit/sec market", said Shri Dodani, CEO of StrataLight (search for StrataLight). "We look forward to continuing our close partnership with TeraXion for the development of our next-generation transmission platforms at 40 Gbits/sec and beyond."

"The shipment of over 5,000 TDCs for line-side application is a clear indication that 40-Gbit/sec wavelengths are starting to be deployed on a wide scale by major carriers worldwide," stated Martin Guy, vice president, product management and technology at TeraXion. "TeraXion is more than ever committed to support our customers such as market leader StrataLight Communications both in terms of manufacturing capacity and shorter delivery time while aligning our R&D efforts to support their next-generation platforms requirements."
