Ethos Networks debuts high-capacity switch

Sept. 8, 2008
SEPTEMBER 8, 2008 -- Ethos Networks says its E-80, designed from the ground up as a PBB/PBB-TE carrier Ethernet switch, delivers programmable traffic management capabilities, supporting flexible future upgrade to the company's DynTE engine, an end-to-end Connection Admission-Control (CAC) mechanism that adapts to traffic conditions in real-time.

SEPTEMBER 8, 2008 -- Ethos Networks (search for Ethos Networks) today announced its E-80 Ethernet service transport switch, the latest addition to its E-series line of purpose-built equipment, which the company claims is designed to deliver an advanced, revenue-generating set of multi-tiered Ethernet services. Now commercially available, the E-80 allows quality-of-service (QoS)-enabled services to be delivered over a Provider Backbone Bridges-Traffic Engineering (search for ) network.

According to the company, the E-series switches are optimized to address Ethernet service delivery with high scalability coupled with the highest service assurance. Unlike most switching products in the market, the E-80 was designed from the ground up as a PBB/PBB-TE Carrier Ethernet switch, notes Ethos. It delivers programmable traffic management capabilities, supporting flexible future upgrade to Ethos' DynTE engine, an end-to-end Connection Admission-Control (CAC) mechanism that adapts to traffic conditions in real-time. The E-80 is fully integrated with Ethos' Domain Management System (DMS) to offer dynamic, real-time centralized carrier-grade control, say company representatives. The E-80 also offers an integrated hybrid card combining 1 Gbit and 10 Gbits for maximum flexibility.

"Balancing network efficiency, operations efficiency, and service determinism has been a constant challenge, resulting in alternate and often conflicting views of centralized versus distributed path selection and quality-of-service decision making," explains Mark Seery, vice president of switching and routing at Ovum. "By matching centralized management techniques with distributed real-time quality-of-service information generation and processing, Ethos Networks joins a new generation of equipment suppliers developing new and fresh approaches to delivering the balance of efficiency and determination desired in today's networks."

The E-80 replaces E-60 as a part of Ethos' end-to-end E-series product line, which includes the entry level E-20, high-capacity E-240, and Ethos DMS. Ethos says the E-80 features best-of-breed capabilities for a full carrier-grade offering, including:
• 80-Gbit/sec of full non-blocking switching capacity;
• Carrier-grade "five-nines" availability;
• Distributed power management;
• Adaptive air flow response system for heat management; and
• ATCA standard chassis and mechanical conformance

E-80 shares a common set of modules with the E-series family to ensure maximum flexibility and pay-as-you-grow deployment possibilities, says the company. It provides support for a range of connectivity options, up to120k services and two million MAC addresses for multipoint services.

"Ethernet-over-Ethernet is the simplest, most efficient means of service delivery, and with the E-80, carriers can have full control over their network traffic while creating new revenue opportunities and enjoying high customer satisfaction rates," contends Hayim Porat, CTO and co-founder of Ethos Networks. "Ethos' newest solution does this by ensuring that all service assurances are strictly met with minimal resources, at every given moment, with full carrier-grade functionality."
