Ovum: 3Q global service provider switching & routing equipment sales grew 9% over 2007

NOVEMBER 12, 2008 � According to Ovum's (search for Ovum) analysis of global third quarter 2008 service provider switching and routing equipment sales, sales in 3Q08 grew to $3.4 billion overall, a 9% increase compared to 3Q07, but down 2% sequentially.
"In the biggest share movements (4Q rolling), Cisco lost 1.0 points while Juniper gained 0.7 points," said Dana Cooperson, vice president, network infrastructure, at Ovum. "Redback's share also increased as it posted its largest SmartEdge quarter ever. Despite gains in edge IP/MPLS, Alcatel-Lucent lost market share due to the declining ATM business."
3Q08 highlights for technology-focused market segments include:
- IP/MPLS core = $755 million, up 5% versus 3Q07
- IP/MPLS edge = $1,758 million, up 21% versus 3Q07
- IP/Ethernet = $658 million, up 1% versus 3Q07
- ATM = $185 million, down 26% versus 3Q07.
- IP transport and services = $1,706 million, up 11% versus 3Q07
- Ethernet transport and services = $1,322 million, up 15% versus 3Q07
- BRAS = $224 million, down 6% versus 3Q07.
- IP/MPLS total: Cisco (50%), Juniper (21%)
- IP/MPLS core: Cisco (58%), Juniper (32%)
- IP/MPLS edge: Cisco (46%), Alcatel-Lucent (17%), Juniper (16%)
- IP transport and services: Cisco (46%), Juniper (26%)
- Ethernet transport and services: Cisco (57%), Alcatel-Lucent (14%)
- BRAS: Redback (30%), Juniper (29%), Cisco (26%).
