MARCH 17, 2008 -- RCN Metro Optical Networks, a division of RCN Corp. (search for RCN), has launched services in Philadelphia. RCN Metro Optical Networks just completed the build of a fiber ring encompassing over 3,000 fiber miles located in Center City, Philadelphia. The infrastructure gives RCN Metro a footprint and capabilities in the heart of the city's central business district, the carrier says.

RCN Metro now offers Philadelphia-based businesses and service providers transport for their data and applications within this region as well as throughout the RCN Metro network. The service provider says the expansion is being driven by customer demand for alternative carriers who can offer highly reliable services deployed over a network that is diverse from other carriers' networks. RCN Metro is already placing customers on this newly launched network.

"RCN Metro has served the greater Philadelphia metro area for many years, and this latest investment demonstrates our continued commitment to provide high quality broadband services to this market," said Richard Beville, regional director of RCN Metro Optical Networks.

RCN Metro's complete set of products is now available in the Philadelphia market, ranging from MPLS-enabled Metro Ethernet services to SONET and wavelength services, IP transport, and network management services.
