9 April 2003 Amsterdam, Netherlands -- KPN is to use optical equipment from Nortel Networks to provide DWDM 10Gbit/s services on its international fibre-optic network.

T-Systems, a division of the Deutsche Telekom Group, will use KPN's new 10Gbit/s service, based on Nortel Networks OPTera Long Haul 1600 Optical Line Systems, to provide its customers with 10Gbit/s wavelength services under a separate agreement with KPN EuroRings, KPN's international business unit.

The agreement between KPN and Nortel Networks, signed in The Hague at the official residence of the Canadian ambassador to The Netherlands, includes the right to use existing Nortel Networks optical equipment and software, as well as network management and services.

"For KPN, this significant customer win with T-Systems is a positive sign that KPN EuroRings is recognised by other carriers in the international data and IP (Internet Protocol) market as a trustworthy partner with a high-capacity network," said Henjo Groenewegen, senior VP of KPN EuroRings.

Maurice Meesters, general manager, Benelux, Nortel Networks, said, "This selection marks both our strong relationship with KPN EuroRings and a market leadership position in deploying high-capacity, long haul optical networks worldwide."

KPN EuroRings can now offer Wavelength services at any point of presence on the KPN international network at speeds up to 10Gbit/s on a standardised optical interface. Nortel Networks OPTera Long Haul portfolio offers service transparency and the ability to add 2.5Gbit/s streams, Gigabit Ethernet or 10 Gigabit Ethernet channels, as well as standard 10Gbit/s SDH wavelengths.

KPN's international network is a state-of-the-art data/IP backbone with a seamless footprint extending across major business and financial centres in Europe. KPN's EuroRings portfolio delivers a full range of carrier and corporate networking solutions over a high-capacity fibre-optic network.

KPN is a telecommunications company offering a wide range of high quality and innovative telecommunications services for both the private and business markets. Its core business activities are mobile communications, fixed networks, Internet services and IP/data services.
