11 November 2002 -- When asked in the second quarter of 2001 how their corporate networks would change by 2003, 83% of Brazil's multinational corporations said they would increase their bandwidth capacity followed by integrating their voice and data services. MNCs in Argentina and Mexico reported similar expectations. Local service providers have noted these predictions.
Erica Eppinger, Director of Latin America Research and Consulting for the Yankee Group said, "When we talk with carriers about metro-area network development, most of them tell us they are worried more about new service provision and network efficiency than overcoming the challenges of fibre scarcity.
"Unlike the North American markets, in which system vendors, component and subsystem suppliers are targeting the ILEC and RBOC market, the Latin American incumbent market is likely to experience the most metro-area growth in the short to medium term
"Given their dominant market positions and their typically deeper pockets, the incumbents will be able to spend on metro infrastructure and services in the near term."
The report, A Snapshot of Metropolitan Area Deployment in Latin America, explores five operator case studies. It also looks into MAN architectures, market issues and strategic goals they were designed to address.
