Optical transport market up 22% in ’05

April 1, 2006

A report by Dell’Oro Group (Redwood City, CA) says that the worldwide optical transport market grew 22% in 2005, with increases reported for all major geographic regions and technology segments. The firm says that North America contributed the largest regional increase, and that SONET/SDH multiservice systems led growth in technology segments.

“Optical transport equipment provides the network infrastructure that telecom service providers need to support the growing base of broadband Internet traffic,” observes Shin Umeda, principal analyst for optical transport research at Dell’Oro Group. “They really stepped up their spending on optical gear last year, and we expect them to continue to do so this year.”

Total optical transport market revenue for 2005 reached $8.4 billion, according to the report. Market leaders in revenue included Alcatel, which saw a 7% year-over-year growth in revenues, followed by Nortel with 15%, Huawei with 45%, and Lucent with 12% yearly growth, respectively.
