TranSwitch unveils Ethernet-over-SONET transport solutions

Sept. 26, 2003
26 September 2003 Shelton, CT Lightwave --TranSwitch Corp. recently announced its latest VLSI solutions for Ethernet and SONET/SDH transport, which includes the EtherMap family of highly integrated OC-3 to OC-12 mappers for Ethernet over SONET/SDH (EoS) applications and the PHAST family of SONET/SDH overhead terminators for TDM, ATM, or packet applications.

26 September 2003 Shelton, CT Lightwave -- TranSwitch Corp. recently announced its latest VLSI solutions for Ethernet and SONET/SDH transport, which includes the EtherMap family of highly integrated OC-3 to OC-12 mappers for Ethernet over SONET/SDH (EoS) applications and the PHAST family of SONET/SDH overhead terminators for TDM, ATM, or packet applications. EtherMap and PHAST devices combine seamlessly to provide a complete EoS chipset solution for transporting a variety of voice and data traffic, say company representatives. Additional TranSwitch products for metro and access networks will be announced this fall.

TranSwitch's EtherMap family of full-function SONET/SDH mappers currently features the EtherMap-3, EtherMap-12, and EtherMap-48 devices. They are especially well suited for EoS networks utilizing Virtual Concatenation (VCAT or VC) and Link Capacity Adjustment Scheme (LCAS). In combination with the PHAST series of framers, the EtherMap family offers EoS application diversity to carriers in the metro edge. Key benefits include multi-port/multi-rate standards compliance, multi-encapsulation capability, and a high degree of bandwidth granularity, resulting in reduced platform cost, faster time-to-market, and greater per-chip revenue generation, claims the company.

The PHAST family of transport solutions affords easier integration with existing backplanes and provides excellent price/performance cost structure for line cards. Key benefits include full compliance with SONET/SDH standards, reduced software development time, and lower space and power requirements, resulting in faster time-to-market (TTM) and significant cost savings.

TranSwitch will feature live demonstrations of three VLSI solutions--the EtherMap-3 OC-3 Ethernet mapper, Envoy-2GE Dual Gigabit Ethernet controller, and Envoy-8FE Fast Ethernet controller--at ITU Telecom World in Geneva, Switzerland on October 12-18, 2003.
