Acterna has announced the delivery of its ANT-40G advanced network tester to Lucent Technologies' Nuernberg facility, which develops high-speed transmission systems. Lucent will utilize the ANT-40G to ensure that the functionality of all network element features of its new optical products or services meet quality and industry standards before being released to the public.
Acterna's ANT-40G was launched this year to allow equipment vendors to shorten product development timelines and decrease time to revenue by verifying that prototype optical network components, including boards, systems and interfaces, are properly designed and are compliant with industry standards.
"Manufacturers must ensure that their 40-Gigabit network elements meet their own internal specifications and the recommendations of international standardization bodies such as ITU-T, ANSI and Telcordia . . . which makes Lucent's selection of our ANT-40G a perfect fit," contends Guido Frangenberg, vice president of marketing for Acterna's Optical Transport division. "With data traffic growing continuously, the ANT-40G is a cost-efficient, easy-to-use testing solution to support equipment vendors and service providers in meeting the technical, economical, speed-to-market challenges in the face of projected increase in the 40-Gbit/sec market."
Lucent will be using the portable Acterna ANT-40G during the hardware engineering and system integration phases of its product development and analysis and to test components that will be fitted into the company's system. The company will also use the tester in the field to verify correct installation and integration of these elements into the networks of major carriers worldwide.
The ANT-40G optical network tester is compact and can be physically taken out into the field, a critical factor in Lucent's decision. Additional features--including the tester's ability to run automatically and be controlled remotely were strong selling points as well, say company representatives, as both deliver opportunities for time and operational expense savings.
The selection of the ANT-40G is the latest in a series of value-add business contract wins between Lucent and Acterna. The successful cooperative working relationship with Lucent on STM-64/OC-192 (10-Gbit/sec) initiatives, as well as the industry first delivery of Acterna's ONT-50 10.7G tester on March 2002, are among other strategic testing solutions Acterna has in place to help enhance Lucent in the area of optical technology development.
