31 January 2003 -- Cablecom rolls out Alcatel's 1696 Metro Span system for 187km Lausanne-Biel Swiss storage area network link.

31 January 2003 -- Alcatel and Swiss cable multimedia and communications provider Cablecom have completed a project to provide site-to-site storage area network (SAN) interconnection over Cablecom's transmission backbone network in Switzerland.

Alcatel has implemented its Storage over Distance solution using its 1696 Metro Span DWDM system to interconnect the Swiss cities of Lausanne and Biel. The project gives Cablecom's transport infrastructure enhanced versatility to support SAN applications, says Alcatel. The deployment positions Cablecom to further implement cost-effective and secure business continuance solutions, such as data mirroring and data replication.

"Storage Area Networking plays a key role in Cablecom's strategy to expand its telecom infrastructure and grow its revenue base," said Ivo Portmann, Cablecom's Head of Wholesale. "Alcatel's solution will allow us to efficiently and cost-effectively deliver a broad range of new SAN services and help our customers to optimise the use of their storage resources across multiple, geographically diverse locations."

Cablecom has 1300 staff serving over 1.5 million households. As a multi-service provider, it offers solutions in analogue/digital cable television and radio, broadband Internet and business applications. Cablecom has been owned by NTL Inc Europe since March 2000.
