October 24, 2002--Alcatel has won a multimillion-dollar contract from China Telecom for its premium G655 fiber, Teralight. This is the first major contract for its G655 fiber in China and was won in collaboration with Alcatel Shanghai Bell, Alcatel's Chinese flagship company.

Alcatel has won a multimillion-dollar contract from China Telecom for its premium G655 fiber, Teralight. This is the first major contract for its G655 fiber in China and was won in collaboration with Alcatel Shanghai Bell, Alcatel's Chinese flagship company.

The award also marks the first major project jointly won with FiberHome Telecommunication Technologies of Hubei, China, since the announcement last month that both companies will establish a joint venture to provide optical fiber in China. Alcatel and FiberHome will work together to supply a major part of the contract, with Alcatel providing the fiber and FiberHome providing the optical cables. For part of the project, Alcatel will also be supplying TeraLight fiber to another Chinese optical cabler, Huiyan.

Alcatel will supply approximately 100,000 km of TeraLight fiber to China Telecom to build the operator's backbone from Shanghai to Nanjing to Hangzhou, and from Wuhan to Nanjing. Alcatel's TeraLight fibers are fully compliant with ITU's G.655 standard, and have been optimized for long-haul and metropolitan applications. Alcatel's fiber is ideal for China Telecom's backbone needs as TeraLight has been designed to evolve with China Telecom's needs in terms of growing bandwidth demand and is compatible with future systems evolution, contend company representatives. TeraLight also provides significant cost savings by reducing the amount of additional equipment required for signal regeneration and compensation.

"We choose Alcatel's TeraLight fiber because it meets with the trend that optical transmission network will go towards ultra-high capacity," explains a China Telecom representative. "Besides, by increasing the capacity available, we are dramatically reducing the cost to us for operating the network today and in the future."

"This is an excellent endorsement for Alcatel's TeraLight fibers and a reaffirmation of our objective to provide the best solutions today for tomorrow's networks," adds Jacques Blanc, president of Alcatel's optical fiber activities. "More importantly, this is our first major sale of TeraLight in China, and is a big breakthrough for us given the level of competition."
