August 20, 2002--Atrica today announced that Uni2 France Telecom Group subsidiary Al-Pi Telecomunicacions, a regional telecommunications service provider based in Barcelona, Spain, has chosen Atrica's optical Ethernet system as the foundation for its next-generation metropolitan area network.
Al-Pi is using Atrica's carrier-class optical Ethernet system, which includes the A-8000 series optical Ethernet core switches, the A-2100 optical Ethernet edge switch, and Atrica's service platform for Ethernet networks (ASPEN). The service provider plans to offer optical Ethernet-based services including a point-to-point Ethernet virtual private line service that provides improved performance over Al-Pi's traditional 64-Kbit/sec leased line service at the same price point, multi-point transparent LAN services, Internet access with value-added virtual private networking, security and firewall services, and circuit emulation services for PBX interconnection.
Al-Pi is a provider of telecommunications services for public entities, corporations and small to medium enterprises. The service provider delivers its voice and data services via 800-km fiber-optic metro networks.
"After a thorough examination of possible solutions to our metro networking needs, we determined that Atrica's optical Ethernet system was the most obvious and direct route to delivering profitable new Ethernet-based services," says Aime Brial, chief executive officer of Al-Pi Telecomunicacions.
"Key features like sub 50-msec resiliency, carrier-class QoS, MPLS-based traffic engineering and easy service provisioning overcame any reservations we had about using Ethernet as the basis for our metro network and paved the way for a substantial reduction in both our capital and operational expenditures," he continues. "We believe Atrica's solution will be the means to more profitable metro services for Al-Pi and our customers."
