OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank announce $500 billion AI infrastructure investment
On January 21, representatives from OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank joined President Donald Trump to announce the investment of up to $500 billion into American AI infrastructure. The joint venture, named Stargate, plans to develop data centers and associated electricity generation facilities with an initial $100 billion investment.
According to a press release from OpenAI, SoftBank and OpenAI are the lead partners for the project; the former will have financial responsibility and the latter operational responsibility. SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son will serve as chairman.
Along with OpenAI and Oracle, Arm, Microsoft, and NVIDIA will act as key initial technology partners. Buildout for the project has already begun in Texas, and more potential sites are being evaluated.
