New LightCounting report: access optics sales to increase in the coming years
Last month, LightCounting released its November 2024 Access Optics Report and Forecast, describing the market outlook for FTTx optics and wireless fronthaul, midhaul, and backhaul network optics.
LightCounting reported that 2024 was a cyclical low point for FTTx and fronthaul in the optical markets, but the group anticipates sales in this segment to increase over the next several years, projecting optics sales to reach $2.9 billion by the end of the decade.
The year also saw the ramp-up of Chinese Fiber-to-the-Room (FTTR) technology, which the group says is a high priority for Chinese telecom operators.
According to a LightCounting newsletter, the FTTR technology represents a high-volume, low-cost opportunity, with some years seeing shipments of over 100 million FTTR products. The group cautions that while deployments are increasing in China, FTTR technology adoption faces uncertainty in other regions.
The new report also explores the threats that Low Earth Orbit Satellite (LEOS) and 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) pose to traditional fiber-based PON networks.
