Zayo Group observed a 106% increase in Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack frequency from the last half of 2023 through the first half of 2024, according to its newly released bi-annual DDoS insights report. In addition to increased frequency, Zayo found that the duration of DDoS attacks is increasing, rising 18% over the same period.
Zayo’s report analyzed data from its DDoS protection customers, looking at over 62,000 threat detections across 14 industries in North America and Western Europe.
Max Clauson, senior vice president of Network Connectivity at Zayo, said that this heightened level of attacks is more than a trend and reported that Zayo expects attacks to increase by as much as 24% by the end of the year.
“The only way to fight back is to add protection to your tech stack, said Clauson in a press release. “When your business is protected, attackers have no other option but to move on to find an easier target.”
Zayo reported that running a DDoS attack takes little time, expertise, or investment, and the prevalence of AI is making bot-based attacks easier and more frequent, and telecommunications companies are still the most targeted industry, making up 57% of all attacks.
