June 9, 2004 Merrimack, NH -- Metrobility Optical Systems today announced that it is now an approved vendor for Telefónica Chile (CTC). Telefónica utilizes Metrobility's last mile solutions to bring mission-critical data and voice services to a variety of business subscribers, including financial institutions, mining companies, and government offices. Potential business value of the relationship will exceed $1 million.

Because of the demand for both voice and data services, Telefónica employs a variety of Metrobility's devices depending on the subscribers' needs. Their most common service incorporates the company's 10/100 multimode and singlemode connectivity cards. To accommodate their voice requirements, they use the company's E1 cards to send voice data over fiber. Where fiber utilization is critical, they use Metrobility's single-strand "BWDM" solution to double their fiber capacity. Management of these elements is accomplished through the company's NetBeacon Element Manager software.

"Metrobility's attention to quality, unsurpassed management software, and responsive technical support was crucial in our selection process," reports Ramon Diaz, project engineer at Telefónica. "We have been using Metrobility's equipment increasingly over the past two years. Now that we have implemented NetBeacon management software, we are realizing greater customer satisfaction and lower IT costs associated with troubleshooting."

Telefónica is the world's fourth largest telecommunications company by market cap and one of the leading companies in Europe and South America. It is the leading operator in the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking markets. Telefónica CTC Chile is the primary telecommunications company in Chile. With an extensive and modern network throughout all the national territory, it provides basic and integral communications to 2.7 million clients.

"Telefónica's implementation of Metrobility solutions is indicative of the service provider's need to satisfy a wide range of customer requirements while maximizing their ROI," contends Steven Curtis, vice president of worldwide sales for Metrobility. "As part of our overall strategy, we work closely with our in-country partner, Coasin Chile, to provide local sales and support to Telefónica."

Metrobility's Radiance family offers a range of chassis-based solutions for Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, T1/E1, T3/E3, and SONET to meet the needs of evolving networks. The company claims to be the first to offer Ethernet First Mile solutions incorporating the operations, administration, and management features being proposed by the IEEE 802.3ah task force.
