March 3, 2004 Ottawa, Canada -- Broadband data utility and Internet services provider Telecom Ottawa has selected Meriton Networks' managed High-Speed Metro (HSM) architecture to extend its network for delivering Gigabit Ethernet services. The first Canadian telecom service provider to deploy a wavelength networking solution, Telecom Ottawa will now be able to offer its customers even faster service provisioning, improved reliability, and increased capacity, say Meriton representatives.

Telecom Ottawa, a subsidiary of Hydro Ottawa Holding Inc., provides bandwidth capacity for data networking, high-speed Internet access, e-business applications, and multimedia services to businesses and public sector organizations. Telecom Ottawa will deploy the complete Meriton architecture to expand its reach into new metropolitan areas. The agreement encompasses the full Meriton architecture, including:
” 7200 OADX, metro core wavelength networking systems;
” 3300 OSU, metro access devices;
” 8600 NMS, network management systems; and
” 8300 EMS, element management systems

Also of note, the Telecom Ottawa network deployment includes an unamplified span of approximately 100 km for Coarse WDM (CWDM). Since higher-powered lasers became available last year, CWDM spans are now able to reach longer metro and even regional distances. The Meriton HSM architecture supports the simultaneous use of CWDM and DWDM within the same network, allowing Telecom Ottawa to expand well beyond their 10-Gbit/sec network using both CWDM and DWDM.

"By deploying Meriton's HSM architecture, we are able to tie together our regional networks, add new wavelength services to our metro product offering, and increase capacity in critical cross sections," reports Dave Dobbin, Telecom Ottawa's chief operating officer. "We are now better positioned to provide affordable access to our bandwidth across Eastern Ontario."

"We are thrilled to have Telecom Ottawa as our first Canadian customer, " adds Mike Gassewitz, president of Meriton Networks. "Telecom Ottawa is widely recognized as the technology leader in the rapidly developing utility telecom market, and we are extremely proud to be a part of their network."
