Sorrento Networks announces first 10-Gbit/sec deployment in Japan

March 24, 2004 San Diego, CA -- Sorrento Networks has announced its first deployment of a 10-Gbit/sec backbone by Global Access Ltd, a Tokyo-based telecom carrier that builds high-capacity, fiber-optic cable networks. The new network spans 114 km and was created for research purposes.

This month, Global Access successfully implemented and turned up Sorrento's first 10-Gbit/sec GigaMux System in Japan. Global Access has been a Sorrento Networks customer since 2002, during which time it has deployed numerous CWDM solutions throughout Japan. Marubeni Network Systems (MNET)--one of Japan's leading network and systems integrators and a Sorrento Networks partner since 2002--carried out the installation and provided Global Access full technical support.

"We selected Sorrento Networks for this project because they have displayed a high level of product reliability over the years and have worked closely with us to deliver quick and cost-effective solutions," reports Koichi Katagiri, deputy managing director of the Network Engineering Division at Global Access Ltd. "Furthermore, Sorrento's solution offered key 10-G features in the most compact chassis. As we expected, this 10-G backbone went operational this March flawlessly," adds Katagiri.

Sorrento Networks' optical transport portfolio allows carriers and service providers to meet their high-bandwidth optical networking needs from the enterprise location through the metro-core and regional networks. With GigaMux, companies can grow their network without disrupting existing services to meet their increasing demands, say company representatives. The GigaMux system scales efficiently, starting with as few as four wavelengths and increasing up to 64 wavelengths per fiber with data transmission speeds of up to 10-Gbits/sec per wavelength. TeraManager, Sorrento's carrier-class optical network element management system, provides end-end optical network management solutions.
