Essex, Fiberspace, and Opticalis collaborate on Ultra-Dense WDM

July 24, 2002--Essex Corp., Fiberspace, Inc., and Opticalis Inc. have completed a Memoranda of Understanding (MOU) to co-market their technologies: patent-pending hyperfine WDM from Essex, patented Gridlocker from Fiberspace, and patent-pending Super Wavelength Creator from Opticalis.

Essex Corp., Fiberspace, Inc., and Opticalis Inc. have completed a Memoranda of Understanding (MOU) to co-market their technologies: patent-pending hyperfine WDM from Essex, patented Gridlocker from Fiberspace, and patent-pending Super Wavelength Creator from Opticalis. An Essex and Fiberspace co-marketing agreement was announced earlier this year.

The companies will synchronize their marketing efforts and collaborate on joint presentations, integrated demonstrations, and co-authored technical papers. A live demonstration of all three technologies working together as an Ultra-Dense WDM (UWDM) system will occur at the National Fiber Optics Engineers Conference (NFOEC) in Dallas, Texas, September 16-18, 2002.

UWDM is a next-generation optical network that promises to enable more revenue-generating wavelengths per fiber without significant new capital expenditures, claim the companies. Hyperfine WDM technology is the enabling optical filter that transmits and receives closely spaced wavelengths. Gridlocker is a tunable DFB laser that generates the ultrastable wavelengths required for narrow channel spacings. And instead of using one laser per wavelength, Super Wavelength Creator generates multiple narrow spaced wavelengths from a single laser.

"Opticalis and Fiberspace share our vision to deliver lower cost all-optical networks using hyperfine WDM," contends Len Moodispaw, chief executive officer of Essex. "The synergy of these three technologies make Ultra-Dense WDM viable for long-haul and metro core applications, where multiple narrow channels simplify network architectures without the dispersion problems of 40 Gbits/sec, and also as an economical solution for the emerging metro and access markets."
